Our upholstery fabric is made of a 100% certified organic cotton/linen fibers, which are unbleached and printed right here in the USA. It is third party GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard
) certified through the finishing of the fabric (before printing). We print with water-based pigment inks that contain no heavy metals, utilizing a printing process that minimizes water consumption. Our inks form a strong bond with the fabric and have excellent color fastness. Heat and pressure are used to finish our printed fabrics instead of chemicals. Digital printing allows us to have virtually no minimums and to print only on demand, so as to avoid fabric waste. Our printer even donates its fabric scraps to local animal shelters!
Care: Although the fabric itself is preshrunk and washable, due to the absence of chemicals in the finishing process, our upholstery fabrics must either be spot cleaned or professionally dry cleaned (please use a "green" dry cleaner whenever possible). Machine washing is not recommended as it will cause fading to occur. However, if you choose to wash please do so in cold water, using a mild detergent and hang to dry. CARLEY KAHN can not be held responsible for damage to fabric after it is washed or treated.
Please note our fabric is intended for indoor use only and is not treated with flame retardant. If you intend to use fabric for heavy traffic areas or for commercial use, please contact
to inquire about our commercial coating. Fabric is 54" wide and sold by the yard. Fabric can be customized in color and scale. If interested, please view our Custom
page for further information.
Pillow covers are made with our upholstery fabric (please see above) and are printed on the front, solid on the back with an invisible zipper closure. To help keep our shipping rates low, please note that pillow covers are sold without an insert. We recommend using a 22 x 22" insert with our 20" square pillow covers for added fullness. The kapok inserts from Fabricadabra
are our favorite sustainable, hypo-allergenic and non-toxic option.
Care: The invisible zipper closure allows for easy removal of the pillow insert before cleaning. Please follow the "Upholstery Care" guidelines above for further instructions.
Please note our pillow covers are intended for indoor use only and are not treated with flame retardant. Pillow covers are 20 x 20" square, but can be customized to any size configuration. Please view our Custom
page for further information.
Details: Our scarves are 100% silk and roughly 50 x 50" square. They are digitally printed, using the same printing methods as our upholstery fabric. Please see "Upholstery Details" above for more detail.
Care: If well cared for, a silk scarf will last for years, making it a smart investment in quality clothing. Store your silk scarf away from direct sunlight, as this can cause fading. Roll your scarf instead of folding it, if you are concerned about creasing. Silk is a natural fiber and needs to breathe, so if you are storing it for longer periods of time please be sure to take it out every six months to allow air to circulate around the silk. Take care not to spray perfume directly on scarves as the chemicals may cause spotting or potential deterioration of the silk fibers. Because our scarves our finished without the use of chemicals, they must be dry cleaned only, using a "green" dry cleaner whenever possible. If you prefer a crisp look, scarves may be ironed on the lowest heat setting. First, mist the scarf lightly with water to dampen and the steam will gently press out all creases. You may lay a towel on top to prevent scorching. Always iron the silk scarf on its dull color side. As a general rule, the less you clean silk the better. CARLEY KAHN can not be held responsible for damage to fabric after it is washed or treated.
ABOUT GOTS CERTIFICATION
GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard
) is recognized worldwide as the leading processing standard for textiles made from organic fibers. It requires all inputs to be from organically grown fibers, which prohibits the use of GMO seeds and requires the soil to be free of pesticides, herbicides and other cytotoxins. In addition to material input requirements, GOTS also has environmental criteria; water treatment is required to monitor PH, temperature and COD and BOD levels so that effluent does not impact our environment. It also has social and justice standards, ensuring that fair trade practices are used. All phases of organic fiber and fabric production must be third party inspected and certified according to GOTS' strict, uniform standards in order to obtain the certification label "organic'.
Why organic is important: Traditionally grown cotton is considered the world's "dirtiest" crop due to its heavy use of insecticides, herbicides and synthetic fertilizers. It accounts for 25% of all the insecticides used in farming and 10% of all herbicides used in the world. These harmful chemicals are killing the subsistence farmers and laborers who grow the cotton. These chemicals can end up in the ground, air, water and food supply. Because organic agriculture doesn't use these methods, choosing organic is an easy way to help protect yourself and the planet.

WHERE DOES YOUR FABRIC COME FROM?
The cotton and linen in our upholstery fabric is grown in northern China and the spinning, weaving and finishing is all done there, as well, to GOTS (see above). Our silk comes from China, as well. Both fabrics are printed, cut and sewn here in the USA as we strive to support local manufacturing as much as possible. Ideally, a fabric would be produced within a short distance from where it is used, but this is not the most important component of carbon footprint in fabrics. The most intense energy use is the growing and finishing of the fabric. With regard to our upholstery fabric from seed to finishing, the shipping from China to America accounts for only 2% of its overall carbon footprint.
We have tried our best to accurately represent colors in our photos, but please note that colors vary from one computer monitor to another. If you are concerned about matching we recommend purchasing fabric swatches through our web site.
Due to minor fluctuations in the digital printing process and the texture of natural fibers, slight variations may occur. Please note the placement of the print on pillow covers will vary from item to item.
